executive director

The Executive Director will provide visionary leadership and overall management to achieve the organization’s mission and implement policies as established by the Board of Directors. This role is crucial to the long-term success and growth of Spaces of Opportunity.

This critical role involves developing and executing fundraising strategies and organizational plans to support the nonprofit’s growth, building and managing relationships with diverse stakeholders, and ensuring effective communication and collaboration with farmers, community members, partner organizations, and the school district. The Executive Director will oversee daily operations, financial management, and program implementation while driving initiatives that have a lasting impact on children, families, and the broader community.

Proven experience in nonprofit leadership, fundraising success, and strong interpersonal skills are essential for this position.

The Lead Farmer at Spaces of Opportunity plays a crucial role in cultivating produce and supporting the operations of our 10.5 acres of farmland. Reporting to the Community Food Systems Manager, the Lead Farmer develops the Farmer Incubator Program by providing coaching and technical assistance to over 20 diverse farmers cultivating between 1/8 and 1 acre each. Responsibilities include utilizing a tractor for farm design and cultivation, maintaining farm roads and irrigation systems, assisting with tractor-required tasks and weed management, and cultivating a designated ¼-acre parcel for programming. This position requires strong knowledge of sustainable agriculture practices, excellent communication skills, and a passion for community engagement in food systems development.

Our Mission

Spaces of Opportunity’s mission is to enable all south Phoenix families to have affordable access to healthy food, active living and healthy roots in their cultures. Spaces is engineering a comprehensive, neighborhood-level food system where gardeners, farmers and farm workers are celebrated as artisans. Spaces is transforming a food desert to a food oasis through the coordination of a 10-acre incubator farm, family gardens and an on-site farmers market.
